How to Troubleshoot CyberLink PowerDVD in Windows Vista

CyberLink PowerDVD is a basic DVD player and potentially a Blu-ray disc player with some set-up. If your CyberLink PowerDVD begins having problems, you can take relatively simple troubleshooting steps. First you have to identify the problem by eliminating common irregularities. If you find the problem is with the PowerDVD, there are several simple solutions that should get your discs playing again.

Difficulty: EasyInstructions1

Test multiple DVDs. If only one of them does not work, the problem is not with the program but with the disc itself. It could be dirty, scratched, or in a format your drive doesn't recognize -- for instance, trying to play a Blu-ray disc on a DVD drive. If they all do not work, then the problem is with the software or hardware.

2

Try playing a few DVDs with another program or try opening it in "My Computer." If no program will play the DVDs and Windows will not recognize them, the problem is with the drive and not with PowerDVD. Be sure your DVD drive is running all the most current drivers. Check the manufacturer's website. If other programs will play the disc, the problem is with the CyberLink PowerDVD.

3

Update your DirectX settings. This video codec comes with Windows, but if your version is too out-of-date you could run into problems playing newer discs. Find the latest version.

4

Close every other program. Certain applications can interfere with each other and one may be messing up PowerDVD. If it works, re-open the applications one by one to identify the problem program. Contact that program's manufacturer to see what the issue is and how to fix it.

5

Re-install PowerDVD. CyberLink recommends this step if others do not work. Compared to many programs, un-installing and then re-installing PowerDVD is quick and simple. Because the program has very few customizable settings, the new version will be almost identical to the one that broke.
